Do you need to train your abs to get a six-pack? On the one hand, some so called fitness experts will tell you that abs are made in the kitchen and it’s a waste of time to train your abs directly. On the other hand, however, others may claim that you must train your abs every day.
So, who’s right? Well, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
For starters, abs aren’t made in the kitchen. They are built in the gym like any other muscle, by prioritizing exercises that take them through a full range of motion and focusing on progressive overload. Second, although compound lifts can stimulate your abs, they’re not effective ab builders, unless you’re a beginner in which case you’ll grow from pretty much doing anything.
For example, a 2014 study on rugby players found that the back squat was ineffective at activating the core musculature, while a simple sit-up had twice as much activation. Another 2009 study found similar results for other compound lifts such as the overhead press and bench press.
